The Introduction

Kyle’s Barley Wine recipe is a big one for sure. We figured we’d take it up a notch by Bourbon Barrel Aging it for close to a year. Perhaps, not surprisingly, the beer is bigger, more bourbony and more barrely than the original recipe.  Our friend Kyle approves.

Brewed in collaboration with Toronto Beer Week homebrew winner Kyle Teichart

Appearance | Deep mahogany colour with a tan foamy head.

Smell | Bourbon notes, currants, cherry, and notes of alcohol.

Taste |  Bourbon, currants, roasted malts, warming alcohol, and hints of chocolate (dark)

Overall |  The only beer that has a ‘Best After’ date!  From Great Lakes Brewery, this is Beard of Zeus Barrel-Aged Barley Wine.

Last year, Great Lakes Brewery announced the release of Beard of Zeus Barrel-aged Barley Wine and that it would be available at the brewery and LCBO on January 16th, 2014.    This beer is unique in that GLB suggested it to be opened on December 31st, 2014 or later (that’s right, they wanted you to wait almost a whole year!)  Wait a second, a beer with a ‘Best After’ date?   There were only 1000 bottles of these available.   I luckily got two of these bottles (thanks to my brother, Ryan, in Peterborough!)

After anxiously awaiting for the day to arrive, I finally got to try it. This beer pours a deep mahogany colour with a tan head.  If held up to the light, it shines ruby red. The aromas are of bourbon, currants, cherry, and the massive 13% ABV.  The flavours  include bourbon, currants, roasted malts, warming alcohol, and some dark chocolate in there.   This is a massive beer and should be shared with family and friends.

If you did cellar this beer like I did, you should check for cracks in the bottle. I noticed cracks forming around the bottleneck and down the label (close call!) Not that I needed an excuse to open it immediately! It’s almost like lightning in a bottle.

It’s more of a sipper than the usual kind.   If you drink this fast, well… good on you.  As 2014 comes to a close, I’ll be sipping on this fantastic Barley Wine from Great Lakes Brewery and Kyle.   Happy New Year!
