  • STYLE: Imperial | Double Black IPA
  • ABV: 9.99%
  • IBU: 99
  • COUNTRY: Canada
  • REGION: Toronto, ON
  • BREWERY: Great Lakes Brewery

From Great Lakes Brewery; this Double Black IPA was brewed on 12/12/12 and dry hopped on 12/21/12 with a high ABV of 9.99%.

Appearance | Pitch black body with a big mocha head that took a while to disappear.

Smell | Caramel, malts, hops, dried fruits, and sweetness.

Taste | Upon first sip, high alcohol with sharp bitterness which yields to the taste of dark bitter chocolate, coffee, dried fruits, and dark malts.

Aftertaste |Bitterness with notes of chocolate, coffee, and malts.

Overall | The original review on this beer happened six months ago. Since then, a second tall boy has been aging in a cellar at room-temperature, preparing for its second encounter with The Brew Head. You can check the first review here.  It’s finally time to review this bad boy again.

Its strong smell is indicative of its high alcohol percentage, which gives it a sharper taste than its pre-aged counterpart. The grapefruit is slightly muted but the hops seem more refined (almost dominant over the dark chocolate undertones).

This is an unreal beer.   Great Lakes Brewery is quickly soaring to the top of The Brew Head’s  favourite breweries.   In the previous review of Apocalypse Later, it was given a four pints.  It seems to get better with age. This time around?

Long sold out | Maybe next year!
