  • IBU: 99

  • REGION: Toronto, ON
  • BREWERY: Great Lakes Brewery

This review is a collaboration with Jeff Wilson, the new patron of The Brew Head.

From Great Lakes Brewery; this Double Black IPA was brewed on 12/12/12 and dry hopped on 12/21/12 with a high ABV of 9.99%.

Appearance | Pitch black with a medium mocha-coloured head.

Smell | Grapefruit, dark malts, hops, caramel.

Taste | Very hop-heavy with strong alcohol at first taste.  The dark malts create a sharp bitterness, which is offset by the punch of coffee and dark bitter chocolate. The absence of carbonation allows for a smooth experience.

Aftertaste |Bold bitterness and hops.

Overall | This is for serious IPA lovers only. The bitterness of the hops is followed quickly by the tanginess spawned by the high alcohol content.  An acquired taste, it becomes smooth to drink  about halfway through the pint.   Apocalypse Later 9.99% is the sequel to Devil’s Pale Ale 6.66% and isn’t available in LCBO or The Beer Store. It’s available at the brewery and select pubs. At 9.99%, make sure you only have one of these during a sitting, or it’s Apocalypse Later for you!
